In Memoriam

Cole Stoddard
It's not often you see people at a funeral dressed in bright pink, red and purple.

Nor do you hear nearly 200 people sing the theme song to "Barney & Friends," a children's TV show.

But Cole would have wanted it that way.

A large crowd gathered at St. Anne Church yesterday to pay their last respects to 5-year-old Cole Stoddard of Sandown. Cole lost his 19-month battle with cancer Friday.

In his memory, the young boy's family asked those who attended the funeral to wear brightly colored clothing.

Cole would have wanted everyone to be happy and not dwell on sadness, according to his father, Anthony Stoddard.

Standing at the altar before the small white coffin, Stoddard gave the eulogy for his young son while accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and daughter, Tara. Cole's twin Troy sat nearby.

"Cole was a boy with a passion for life," his father said. "As parents, we are supposed to teach our children, but I think I learned more from him."

Stoddard, wearing a bright purple shirt, told of Cole's enthusiasm and desire to live every day to the fullest.

But that wasn't easy as the youngster battled neuroblastoma, a disease that attacked his bones and organs.

Cole's months of treatments at Tufts Medical Center in Boston took a toll on his body, but didn't deter his spirit, his father said.

"He always bounced back, determined to keep up with the other children," Stoddard said.

Cole looked up to his older sister and did everything with his twin brother, whether it was playing with trucks or digging in the dirt. They even slept together, dozing off with their arms wrapped around each other, Stoddard said.

The night before Cole died, he told his parents, "Smile, be happy." He also asked his father to sing songs with him, including "I Love You" from the Barney TV show.

"That song allowed me to see that smile one last time," Stoddard said.

He asked the crowd to join in the song in his son's memory, causing many to break down in tears as they sang the lyrics.

Earlier, deacon William Mullen, wearing a bright blue shirt under his long white robe, told how one of Cole's last wishes was for his family to attend church together.

He also asked to participate in the Eucharist, unusual for a child that age, Mullen said.

"Cole was certainly an extraordinary young man," he said.

Mullen led the approximately 90-minute service, along with the Rev. John Michalowski of Saints Mary and Joseph Parish in Salem.

Loved her family, will be missed

Skyla enjoyed spending time with her family, especially camping in the White Mountains, and watching DVD’s of her favorite shows; Blue’s Clues and Yo Gabba Gabba. Skyla’s smile always lit up the room she was in and she was adored by all that were around her. She will be missed by all but the memory of her will live on forever.

You are our “Beautiful Angel” now, so spread your wings and fly high baby girl. We Love You.

In addition to her parents Skyla is survived by her big brother Joshua Blaney, of Lynn, her grandparents Susan Wilson Blaney and Larry Blaney Sr., of Lynn and Conway, NH, Colleen Crosby and Gregory Crosby Sr., of Seabrook, NH, formerly of Lynn, her uncles, Alex Blaney, Joseph Blaney, Gregory Crosby Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Crosby, Ryan Crosby and many cousins.

Lauren Costa

The town rallied around Lauren Costa, a energetic and ever-positive 9-year-old who spent much of her life battling cancer, with fundraisers that brought in tens of thousands of dollars to help pay for her medical care.

Her illness finally caught up to her on Christmas, when she died at Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.

“She was a special little girl,” said Jeff Kornegay, a neighbor and close friend of the Costa family, who organized fundraisers for Lauren in 2004 and last September. “Everyone that she met, she touched in some way.”

Kornegay said he hopes to be able to do something in Lauren’s memory. Her family is asking that people who attend her wake on Thursday wear colorful clothing. The funeral procession will include motorcycles, just like the September fundraiser that helped pay her medical bills.

Police Chief Joseph Ferreira got a police non-profit called Cops For Kids With Cancer involved, which raised $5,000.

“We were happy to do that,” Ferreira said. “She was a remarkable little girl. She endured far more than many of us will ever endure in our lifetime.”

Lauren, who was in third grade at the Chace Street School, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a highly malignant brain tumor, when she was only 17 months old. A few years later, she was diagnosed with myelodysplasia, a syndrome formerly called pre-leukemia. She underwent a cord blood transplant a short time later. Though she survived, the treatment for medulloblastoma caused her latest ailment, glioblastoma, another rare form of brain cancer. She was undergoing chemotherapy as recently as last week.

She is survived by her parents, Michael and Lisa Costa, and her sister, Aubrey Reynolds.

Ethan Hickey
April 20, 2009

Ethan Patrick Fox Hickey, age 10, of Woburn, and formerly of Malden, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2009, at home surrounded by his family.

September 2, 1998 was the day we became blessed with the birth of Ethan; he was the cherished son of Barbara (Lore) Hickey and Mark Hickey. A tiny little miracle, born premature, yet strong and full of fight. From the beginning of his life he was faced with health problems. However, he thrived as a child, enjoying Preschool at Rockland Montessori School in Malden. Ethan then went on to kindergarten at the Ferryway School in Malden. It was then Ethan was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Though the odds of survival were against him, and he had many bumps along the way through treatment, he soared through to recovery and remission, playing baseball for Malden Little League, attending school, and just wanting to be a normal child. In April of 2007 Ethan became ill and was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

Shortly after this, on Ethan’s birthday September 2, 2007, we moved to Woburn. Ethan began school at the Altavesta Elementary School and on a regular basis attended the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn, where Ethan and his four brothers Cory, Shane, Nick and Markie were embraced and supported. Ethan played baseball for Woburn Little League. No matter where Ethan went he always touched the lives of those he met along the way.

Ethan received all his treatment at the Mass General Pediatric HEME oncology Clinic with the support and love of all the staff. In October of 2008 Ethan’s Lymphoma relapsed with the only hope for a cure being a bone marrow transplant. Although we moved as quickly as we could to plan the procedure, Ethan developed a brain tumor in January of 2009. Further testing revealed that he had yet a third cancer, Adenocarcinoma. We were faced with the knowledge that there were no options for further treatment.

Ethan’s last wish was to go to Fenway Park and see a Red Sox game. Thanks to our wonderful friends at Mass General and Walsh Construction Company, this wish come true on April 8, 2009. We enjoyed our last family outing, and a beautiful one at that. What can a Mother say, when she loses her son? What words, what thoughts, what memories are most important at a time like this? How does a Mother sum up her son’s short life?

When I look at Ethan, when I think of Ethan, I realize what a special gift he was from Heaven. He taught life lessons  to all of us around him and displayed courage and strength to rise above the obstacles in his life. He did all this with style, grace and dignity. Even in Ethan’s last days he had his amazing smile, his manners and the ability to make us laugh. Ethan will be forever in all our hearts and will be remembered for the love and passion he had for life and wanting to just be a kid, despite it all. His smile brightened the day and lifted our hearts. We are so proud of him and are blessed to be touched by this little angel. I am so proud to be Ethan’s mom, it is an honor and he is my hero.

Ethan is survived by his beloved parents Barbara (Lore) Hickey of Woburn and Mark Hickey of Mansfield. He was the step-son of Shawn Daly and Theresa Hickey, loving brother of Cory, Shane, Nickolas, Markie, J. C., Matthew, Eric, and the late Devin, dear grandson of Barbara & Leo Lore of Canton, Robert & the late Catherine “Kay” Hickey of Charlestown, George & Mary Iannuzzo of Tewksbury, and Gary & Wendy Hennessey, special godson of Lisa Marie (Lore) Lambert & Robert Hickey. Ethan is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, good friends, & his loving and supportive community of Woburn.

Family & Friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, April 25th at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Church, 80 Elm St. (Rte. 38) Woburn. Interment Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Visiting hours Friday, April 24th from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m.

Aidan Charles Loftus
December 28, 2008
Aidan was born in Newton-Wellesley on January 6, 2005. Born to Noel and Brenda he was the younger brother to Noel Jr., Brigid and Coleman. He was the best little brother in the whole wide world-as he often stated himself-and he was.

Aidan was diagnosed at seventeen months with a brain tumor. He underwent surgery at Children’s Hospital Boston and the prognosis was not good according to the doctors. However, they were able to remove the tumor and in their words, “it just peeled away”. After surgery, Aidan underwent a 6 week radiation program and appeared to be doing well.

The tumor returned and Aidan started chemotherapy at the Dana Farber. After several rounds of chemo, Aidan’s tumor became more resistant and it began to grow and spread. After more rounds of radiation, it was decided to stop chemo.

Aidan loved to play ball-football, baseball and soccer were his favorites. He also liked to watch movies, most notably “Cars” and “The Bee Movie”.

Aidan touched a lot of people in his short life and he always had a smile on his face. Aidan is fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Aidan passed away peacefully at home on December 28th, 2009 surrounded by his family.
Aidan is gone but he is never far away.
